Hyrian humanoid robot Pepper and the Unitree A1 robot dog visited our Hyvinkää site to introduce themselves and entertain the staff.

Two robots visited the Hyvinkää site on Wednesday 24 November. One of them was Pepper, a social humanoid robot. Pepper currently serves students, staff and customers at Hyria, HAMK and the City of Riihimäki. The other visitor was the Unitree A1 robot dog, which in the future could assist, for example, in transporting and carrying items. Robotics is already part of everyday life, and its presence is growing rapidly. Many households already have their own “James” chasing dust bunnies, and a robot may take care of mowing the lawn. Companies’ interest and need to utilise robotics is also increasing. It is therefore important that robotics expertise is developed in cooperation between educational institutions and businesses.

“The purpose of the visit was to learn about robotics in working life and the possibilities it brings,” says Irina Turunen from Lapp Automaatio’s sensor production. “No one can predict how quickly robotics will become more common and an ordinary part of daily life at work, at home, in shops or in care homes. The development has been extremely fast—for example, mobile phones evolved from simple phones into ‘mini-computers’ in no time. The sky is the limit for robotics as well,” Irina reflects.

“Even now, Pepper can already act as a receptionist, and the robot dog can transport items from one place to another,” says Jari Mattila from Hyria. “Pepper has three different dances programmed into it, so it can even serve as a break-time exercise instructor. The robot dog can’t fetch yet, but it can pass items. LAPP is actually the first company Pepper and the robot dog have visited,” Jari concludes.
