Chemical properties

Which material requirements must apply to a product in order to meet the intended application?
Does a material actually react to its surroundings in the way that is desired in each individual case?
Depending on the materials that make up a product, it will differ in its imperviousness to acids, alkalis, oils and corrosion and in its reaction to the effects of a fire. Chemical properties are therefore an important selection criterion when deciding for or against a product.

Halogen-free
What is a halogen-free cable?
As their name suggests, halogen-free cables are halogen-free in the composition of the plastics. Halogenated plastics are identified by the chemical elements in their names, such as the aforementioned polyvinylchloride, chloroprene rubber, fluorinated ethylene propylene, fluoropolymer rubber and more.

Lead-free
What is a lead-free cable gland?
Lead-free cable glands are also cable glands. The only difference is that they are produced without the common two to four per cent lead content as an additive in brass, which is permitted under the RoHS Directive and is common in the market.

Oil-resistant
What are oil-resistant cables?
In the case of oil-resistant cables, the materials used in the plastic outer sheath will not react chemically with oils. For a cable to be considered oil-resistant, the properties of the plastics must remain unchanged despite temporary or permanent contact with oil. Examples of oil-resistant plastics are fluoropolymers or polyurethanes (PUR). PVC cables are only oil-resistant if special chemical additives are added to the polyvinyl chloride outer sheath.

Biobased
As a family business, LAPP thinks long-term and acts responsibly. This is why LAPP endeavours to use fewer raw materials, generate less waste and reduce CO2 emissions in the production and distribution of its products. Sustainable product design extends across the entire value chain. The best example:ETHERLINE® FD bioP Cat.5e, the first series cable with bio-based plastic content in the outer sheath. Further lines with a reduced CO2 footprint will follow in the future. LAPP is thus a partner for sustainable development in the industry and helps its customers to pursue their sustainability goals.
